Maine's 2010 Fatality Numbers Are Reported

The state recorded 161 traffic fatalities in 2010, and even though the figure is two more than in 2009, it still is considered one of the lowest on record, Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Monday.
“That was the third-safest year since 1959,” he said of the 2010 statistics. “It is two more than last year, and six more than ’08.”
Ruth Mlotek of the Iris Network had shared some video segments at last October’s MTSC meeting on issues people with vision loss face when walking and crossing streets on busy urban roads. The raw footage featured different individuals narrating on-the-go as they navigated busy street crossings...

Orientation and Mobility Specialists, the instructors who train visually impaired individuals to use the white cane, cross streets and ride the busses offer suggestions to motorists regarding how to help the blind pedestrian.
