A Message from the MTSC Chair

Thank you for visiting MTSC's web site. MTSC wants to be a transportation safety resource for you. It is my mission as Chair to promote the MTSC and to further spread the highway safety message to others. I believe that we as highway safety professionals are passionate about our role in saving lives on Maine's roads, but in order to make a difference that passion needs to be expressed and passed to others around us. If you have questions or suggestions on how we can promote important safety issues, please feel free to contact us.

NHTSA Crash Facts 2012

Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2012

Summary : A statistical projection of traffic fatalities shows that an estimated 34,080 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2012. This represents an increase of about 5.3 percent as compared to the 32,367 fatalities that occurred
in 2011, as shown in Table 1. If these projections are realized, 2012 will be first year with a year-to-year increase in fatalities since 2005. Traffic fatalities have been steadily declining over the previous six years since reaching a
near-term peak in 2005, decreasing by about 26 percent from 2005 to 2011. Also, in 2012, fatalities increased in the first (up 12.6%), second (up 5.3%), third (up 3.2%) and fourth (up 1.7 %) quarters, as compared to the respective

Distracted driving: Crash data lets phones off the hook

Cellphones' role in fatal crashes is underreported, which can be a fatal oversight, advocates say.

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Seventeen-year-old Kelsey Raffaele's last words were over a cellphone to a friend: "I'm going to crash!" The car she was driving had clipped a snowbank and spun into oncoming traffic, where it was T-boned by an SUV. She died at a hospital without regaining consciousness.

A driver uses an iPhone while negotiating Los Angeles traffic. Crashes that involve cellphone use are seriously underreported, according to a recent analysis by the National Safety Group, an advocacy group. New York state reported only one cellphone-involved fatal crash in 2011 and 10 in 2010.

Police chalked the accident up to mistakes made by a novice driver, unaware that she had been on the phone at the time. Her phone was found later in the back seat, and the possibility that distracted driving might have been a cause is missing from statistics kept by police and the federal agency that compiles crash data.

Risks of Texting While Driving

Teen texting behind wheel greater risk than drinking

The habit now surpasses the number of teenagers who drink and drive, research indicates.

NEW YORK – Texting while driving has become a greater hazard than drinking and driving among teenagers who openly acknowledge sending and reading text messages while behind the wheel of a moving vehicle.

Texting while driving has quickly grown among teenagers during the last five to seven years, while alcohol use among teenage drivers has decreased by 54 percent since 1991.

The number of teenagers who are dying or being injured as a result of texting while driving has skyrocketed as mobile device technology has advanced. Researchers at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park estimate more than 3,000 annual teen deaths nationwide from texting and 300,000 injuries.
