Teen Driver Initiatives: Reducing Crashes & Fatalities

A course offered at Maine Criminal Justice Academy

The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety & AAA Northern New England recently presented Teen Driver Initiatives: Reducing Crashes & Fatalities at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. The program, accredited by the MCJA Board of Trustees and attended by 19 police officers from around the state, was designed as a train-the trainer program to provide school and community resource personnel with tools needed to help address the concerns and risks associated with teen driving. Brad Foley, Safety Director at MDOT opened the program with an overview of National and Maine statistics for teen drivers followed by Eric Bellavance, Manager of Driver Education at the Bureau of Motor Vehicle who highlighted the Maine graduated drivers licensing process, a summary of Maine teen laws and the importance of the enforcement of these laws.

Other topics discussed throughout the day provided an opportunity for attendees to highlight programs in their areas and included: parental involvement, early intervention, an overview of Alive@25 presented by Terry Booth of the Safety & Health Council of Northern New England, an overview of Get Out Alive:The Parent Teen Driving Challenge plus presenter training for AAA’s Dare to Prepare and Maine Driving Dynamics Teen Edition programs.

 

Summary of the Mortorcycle Safety MTSC Meeting Held May 10th

Erik also posed his concern in regards to seasoned riders or baby boomer generation riders re-entering the sport with little or no training or updates.
